5 Ways Digital Transformation has Impacted Field Mobility

We’ve talked about digital transformation before on Enterprise Visibility, but what is it exactly, and how is it impacting field mobility? Digital transformation is the process of leveraging the changes and opportunities that digital technologies present both today and in the future. And according to George Prest, CEO of MHI, that means a manufacturing industry focused on “next generation supply chains that are digital, on-demand and always-on.” He adds, “Digital supply chains will be the predominant model within five years.” In today’s post on Enterprise Visibility, we’ll uncover the top five technologies enabling digital transformation within the field service industry. Here they are:
The Internet of Things (IoT) presents businesses across all industries with a multitude of opportunities, allowing them to drive innovation and strategic advantages. According to Peter Middleton, research director at Gartner Research, “The growth in the IoT will far exceed that of the other connected devices.
By 2020, the number of smartphones, tablets and PCs in use will reach about 7.3 billion units. In contrast, the IoT will have expanded at a much faster rate, resulting in a population of about 26 billion units at that time.” These numbers alone are nothing less than staggering. The IoT is impacting field mobility in tremendous ways as it is increasing efficiencies and visibility into processes and procedures and allowing field service to take real-time data and use it to deliver more personalized customer experiences.
As an example, with the IoT, field service workers can be more proactive by responding to traffic and weather conditions as they head out to their appointments. The IoT not only creates a safer work environment for field service workers, but also helps them prepare for potential delays.
Having the right person available at the right location and the right time is critical in field service. Mobile devices have impacted service providers by providing a tool that enables a better customer experience and greater communication to the end user.
