BizInt Smart Charts
BizInt Smart Charts is a Windows desktop software suite for creating tabular reports and visualizations from patent, drug pipeline, and clinical trial databases.
Publisher review
BizInt Smart Charts is a Windows desktop software suite for creating tabular reports and visualizations from patent, drug pipeline, and clinical trial databases. Founded in 1996 by Diane Webb and John Willmore—former leaders of TRW Smart Charts—BizInt Solutions developed the platform from technology originally created for U.S. intelligence agencies and later adapted for pharmaceutical and biotech analysis. The software is strongest in life sciences competitive intelligence: IP searchers and R&D teams use it to integrate multi-database patent searches, map drug development landscapes, and track clinical trials across sources including Patsnap, Derwent Innovation, Cortellis, Citeline Pharmaprojects, ClinicalTrials.gov, and GlobalData.
Users can combine results from competing data providers, standardize nomenclature across sources, and refresh reports to flag new records and changes. What distinguishes BizInt from web-based alternatives is its desktop-first model—the company explicitly chose not to build cloud versions, arguing that web interfaces would sacrifice functionality, increase costs, and not solve IT deployment challenges. The tradeoff is real: the software runs only on Windows 7 through Windows 11 and requires explicit Data Execution Prevention exceptions on some systems. BizInt remains a small, independent company (now based in Seattle) with a focused customer base of pharma, biotech, and chemical R&D shops that accept Windows-only deployment for the reporting speed and customization depth the tool provides.
How it works
-
Multi-database data integration
Combines search results from multiple patent databases (STN, Orbit, PatBase, Derwent Innovation) or clinical trial sources (Citeline, Cortellis, ClinicalTrials.gov, GlobalData) into unified tabular reports without manual copy-paste.
-
Automatic record matching across sources
Uses Common Patent Family IDs or Common Trial IDs to identify related records across databases and automatically merge them into consolidated rows, surfacing conflicts in data values.
-
Report refresh and change tracking
Re-runs saved reports and color-codes new records (green) and updated information (blue), allowing teams to track landscape changes over time without manual comparison.
-
Custom column creation and layout templates
Users can add custom columns for notes and keywords, modify report structure on-the-fly, and save layouts as reusable templates for consistent reporting across the organization.
-
Export to multiple formats
Outputs reports to Word (with configurable table formatting and column width control), Excel, PDF, HTML, and VantagePoint Smart Charts Edition format for further analysis and visualization.
-
VantagePoint Smart Charts Edition add-on
Companion tool that cleans and normalizes data (standardizing inventor names, company assignees, drug names, clinical trial phases) and enables visualization and technology clustering before or after report generation.
-
BizDash visualization platform
Newer tool for creating interactive drug landscape maps and dashboards from BizInt Smart Charts data, complementing the tabular reporting focus of the core product.
Strengths and trade-offs
Strengths
- Desktop application eliminates cloud latency and licensing complexity; designed for teams processing large patent and trial datasets repeatedly without per-query costs.
- Specialized workflow for multi-database deduplication and record matching—built on 30+ years of R&D intelligence domain expertise, not a generic data integration tool adapted to life sciences.
- Windows-only simplicity avoids cloud vendor lock-in and data residency concerns; one-time or annual license per user/site, with no per-import or per-report metering.
Trade-offs
- Windows desktop only; no Mac native support (Bootcamp/Parallels workaround required) and no web or mobile interfaces, limiting adoption in organizations standardized on other platforms or requiring remote field access.
- Steep learning curve for customization and no visible modern UI overhaul in recent years; product documentation and community resources are sparse compared to cloud competitors like Palantir or Insightly.
- Narrow market focus (life sciences and IP only) and small company scale mean limited integrations with emerging data sources, slower feature velocity, and no enterprise SLA or multi-region deployment options.
Pricing context
BizInt Smart Charts uses annual subscription licensing with per-user seats or site/enterprise options. Patents and Drug Development Suite start at $4,350/year (single user) with additional seats at $1,850 each; site/team licenses run $24,500/year, and global enterprise licenses reach $25,000/year. The combined Drug Development & IP license tiers higher: $6,000 (single user), $2,500 per additional user, $24,500 (site), and $49,000 (global).
VantagePoint Smart Charts Edition, sold in conjunction with a BizInt license, costs $4,100/year plus $2,100 per additional user. BizInt Smart Charts Viewer is complimentary for existing licensees. Pricing effective January 1, 2026, in US dollars.
All licenses include software upgrades and support. Free trial downloads available for Patents and Drug Development products.
